Room 11 - Year 3/4

WELCOME TO ROOM 11

I look forward to sharing a year of learning and adventure with your children and am very excited about the variety of topics to be covered this term.  I will enjoy watching your children grow and develop as independent learners.

This term will be a great term with lots of learning happening.   Numeracy this term will continue to cover Addition and Subtraction.  You can help your child at home by playing number games with them, like number hangman  where players ask questions to find out about the placement of digits within a number. You can also play Monopoly, Bingo, board games, and cards.

Strand Maths this term is Measurement and we will be covering the topics of Money and Time.  You can help your child by counting and calculating,  pocket money, banking together, shopping and playing Monopoly.  For Time ask your child to tell you the time on an analogue clock.  Ask them to  tell you how many minutes until you go somewhere.  Maths is everywhere! Regardless of the age or ability of your child there are opportunities for them to practice their maths.

Writing this term will be about writing recounts and creating book reviews.  You can help your child at home by correcting spelling words, and use what they know about sounds in words to try to work out how to spell unknown words   and building on their knowledge of punctuation. Reading is important  at home. You can have a pile of reading materials available – library books (non-fiction and fiction), kids’ cookery books, simple timetables, newspapers and magazines, catalogues and any other reading that supports your child’s current interest.

The Inquiry topic this term is “A World without Water” we will be looking at how water is used, hydroponics, deserts, drought and desalination.  We will be making a rain gauge during class time so students will need to bring a clear plastic soft drink bottle to school by Monday week three.  Students will also be able to walk around Riverhead to discover all the places water can be found.  We need lots of parent help for this so please if you can help, that would be wonderful.

Our Visual Arts this term is a focus of Under the Sea.  We will be creating collages of images in the ocean.  They are going to be stunning.

Our Sports and PE this term is all about large balls and we will be practicing throwing, kicking, passing and catching.  We will be playing several different large ball games over the term.

We will be learning about music notation during Music.  We will be playing simple songs on instruments.  We will also be exploring Dance during the term.  A busy term ahead.  Don’t forget if you have any concerns during the term see me.
