Cellphone Use in Schools Policy

The government has introduced new regulations about cellphones in school. They require all state schools to have specific phone rules in place. The new approach for cellphones in school is “away for the day” which means cellphones do not come with any learner to school.

At Riverhead School we request that all cellphones stay at home. If you require your child/ren to have their cellphone for communication purposes before or after school it must be handed into the school office for safe keeping prior to the school day starting and then collected at the end of the day.

If your child needs to contact you during the day, they can do so through the front office, and parents can also contact the school office if needed.

A personal digital device is a privately owned digital device that is not part of the school approved BYOD programme. Smartwatches and cellphones fall into this category. Smartwatches are not to be used to communicate with parents throughout the school day, they must be switched to non-communication mode during school hours. We ask that if your child/ren’s smartwatch does not have this ability it stays at home, or is handed into the school office at the start of the day.

We are required to start the new policy as of Monday 4 March - please have a talk with your children so they clearly understand the procedures required. Thank you very much for your understanding and support of this new government policy.
